چکیده

Real time forecasts of the snowmelt runoff up to six days in advance were carried out for basins in the Alps of the Zillertal, Austria, which are part of a network of reservoirs for hydropower generation. The forecasts are based on the Snowmelt Runoff Model (SRM). Input data to SRM are taken from online measurements of hydro-meteorological parameters, from numerical weather forecast models, and from ERS SAR PRI data. Data links were set up through the Internet to receive the model input data in real time or near real time. The snow extent, automatically derived from ERS SAR PRI images, was available as input to SRM only a few hours after image acquisition. The forecast products were accessible by customers via Internet.

Geometric and Physical Constraints on Recovering Snow Covered Area from SAR

Snow covered area is an important variable in snowmelt runoff modelling. SAR can supply information on this parameter by detecting the decrease in the backscattering coefficient which occurs when the snowpack becomes wet. However, the method is subject to several geometric, geophysical and logistical constraints which limit its general applicability. These include missing coverage due to relief...

The Performance of the Ers-2 Synthetic Aperture Radar

The performance of the ERS-2 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is routinely assessed at the ESA Product and Archiving Facilities (PAFs) via a variety of quality assessment and calibration measures. This paper gives the latest ERS-2 SAR quality assessment and calibration results including updates to ERS-2 SAR internal calibration and stability results, updates to the ERS-2 nominal replica pulse cor...

Validating Soil Moisture Estimation with Ers Pri Data: Operational Use in Decide, a Decision Support System for Floods

DeciDe, born as a project funded by ESA/ESRIN, is now a system for flood forecasting at the city of Florence based on the integration of heterogeneous data sources. For DeciDe a specific technique has been developed to use couples of ERS-2 PRI images from the same frame and track for comparison with corresponding moisture maps computed from rainfall fields. Couples of data sets are used to negl...

Rainfall-runoff process modeling using time series transfer function

Extended Abstract 1- Introduction Nowadays, forecasting and modeling the rainfall-runoff process is essential for planning and managing water resources. Rainfall-Runoff hydrologic models provide simplified characterizations of the real-world system. A wide range of rainfall-runoff models is currently used by researchers and experts. These models are mainly developed and applied for simulation...

SAR, SSMI and numerical model characterisation of Arctic Ocean coastal polynyas

Coastal polynyas in the Arctic basin from the winter period (January to March) are characterised using ERS−1/2 SAR images [full resolution (PRI) and Browse image product], passive microwave data [the polynya SSM/I signature model (PSSM), the Bootstrap and the NASA Team algorithms] and a numerical polynya model (NPM). A SAR polynya algorithm is used to delineate open water, new ice, young ice, a...
